This yellow gold Vacheron Constantin reference 6194, from 1957, features a double-signed dial by the original retailer, Cartier. Its refined style and aesthetic are typical of the period from Vacheron Constantin, with the overall appeal of the watch being enhanced through the Cartier signature, making this example as rare as it is attractive.
A double signed example
Vacheron Constantin boasts a lengthy and uninterrupted history, dating back to 1755. The firm’s founder, Jean-Marc Vacheron, was one of many cabinotier-watchmakers who specialised in the production of complex components. Upon partnering with François Constantin, Vacheron (the brand) became widely known for upholding the finest horological traditions - enamelling, piercing, engraving and engine-turning.
Double-signed dials from Vacheron Constantin have a special appeal to collectors, given their rarity, as well as the romantic associations which they convey. One can easily imagine a client strolling into a Cartier boutique in the mid 20th century and walking out shortly thereafter, with this double-signed reference 6194 on the wrist. Cartier having long been connected with bringing refined creations to its clients, the french jeweller's signature can also be found on watches from Patek Philippe, Rolex and Universal Genève, among others.
The Design
Considered to be one of the members of the "Holy Trinity" of watchmaking, Vacheron Constantin knew a thing or two about dress watch design. The overall design of the ref. 6194 is balanced and refined. The dial is clean and understated, featuring "Vacheron Constantin" and "Genève" at 12 o’clock, which is counter-balanced by the "Cartier" signature at 6 o’clock. In keeping with this classic styling, the yellow gold stick hands correspond harmoniously with the dial, and complement the applied hour markers, also made in yellow gold.
The 31mm case has a thin, rounded bezel and arched concave lugs, which offer a distinctive charisma to an otherwise classical design, and also enhance the overall presence of the watch on the wrist. Measuring just 4mm thick, this ref. 6194 serves as an elegant dress watch, fitting perfectly beneath the cuff. The watch also has its original crown and snap-on caseback, correctly hallmarked and signed inside, which is also engraved with "J.P.H. 7-21-61".
The Movement
Powered by a manually-wound, calibre 1003 (signed “Vacheron & Constantin”), the movement features Côtes de Genève embellishment and bevelling, constructed with 17-jewels.
The Set
