Crafted from silver by the famed smiths, Ravinet d’Enfert, this elegant Hermès tastevin integrates distinctly nautical inspirations through the rope detailing found on the rim of the piece.
While the history of Hermès is more closely entwined with luxury saddle and harness making for noblemen, this elegant piece draws upon nautical inspirations instead, as can be seen from the nautical rope detailing found encircling the rim of the tastevin.
A tastevin was traditionally used by traders and tasters to assess the health and quality of the wine and was often carried around users’ necks on a chain or in their pockets. The silvered colour of the tastevin was supposed to help with reflecting light, allowing users to examine the colour of the wine more easily.
Forged by Ravinet d’Enfert, famed silversmiths located in Paris, for Hermès, the piece is an excellent specimen of the period. The rope detailing on the tastevin extends outwards, forming a stylised loop that doubles up as a handle, allowing the taster to hold it up to their mouth. In keeping with its age, the piece has developed an attractive patina that enhances its vintage charm.
Whether used for its original purpose or as a catchall or ashtray, this beautifully-crafted Hermès tastevin is the perfect complement to a sideboard or work desk.
