Toric Classic | Rose Gold

Heavily inspired by classical architecture and patterns, this onyx-dial Toric Classic is a rarely seen example from the earliest pieces produced by Parmigiani Fleurier. With a minimalist palette and vintage size, the watch draws upon a myriad of influences, yet combines them in a way that remains distinctive amongst its neo-vintage peers.

Introduced as part of the original 1998 catalogue offerings, this Toric Classic piece integrates many features found on the earliest Parmigiani Fleurier watches, such as the javelin-shaped hands and knurled bezel in the style of Greek columns. A time-only example, the other stone dials part of this series includes lapis lazuli and mother of pearl.

Completely bare of indexes, the watch adopts a minimalistic style that we have seen become a popular concept in recent years, but in this instance, complements the Greek key-style pattern encircling the dial. Also known as a meander, Parmigiani Fleurier pares back the design to four key placements, modernising their classical inspiration. Meanwhile, a subtle cartouche bearing the Parmigiani Fleurier name can be found below the hands. At 36mm, the watch is reminiscent of vintage pieces. While some of the larger pieces include a double-stepped bezel, this piece notably only has a single-stepped bezel, possibly to accommodate for the size of the watch and to avoid detracting from the additional engravings on the inner section of the bezel.

With its deep black tones, the backstory as to how this onyx dial was achieved is especially intriguing. In an interview with Michel Parmigiani, he mentions that these stone dials were particularly challenging to work with, and he was lucky to come across someone who was able to work with him to help achieve his vision. “At the time of the launch of the Parmigiani Fleurier brand, I thought that we would not be able to present our collection. I did not have any dial makers yet... I did not interest many people. So, what was I to do?” he says. “I started to make dials. It's funny: the one dial I couldn't do because it was onyx – well, I found one supplier who was able to do it. We had a lucky star with us.”

The movement that powers this watch is the calibre 13301. The movement can be seen through the sapphire caseback, revealing a beautifully engraved rotor bearing the PF signature, with subtle Côtes de Genève below.

Closer look

This Parmigiani Fleurier onyx dial is in very good condition overall. The case and lugs show virtually no signs of wear, likely worn on only a handful of occasions. The hallmarks and engravings on the case back are crisp and well defined.
