Every now and again we come upon a clock that effortlessly combines the glamour of the very early days of international travel with modern technological conveniences. Cased in beautifully aged, dark brown textured leather, this will be just as at home on a bedside table as it will be in a cabin on the Orient Express.

Bearing design hallmarks of the first half of the 20th century, it features a matte black military-inspired dial with a French day wheel as well as pointer date. While Jaeger-Le Coultre is known for the ‘Ados’ travel clocks, this particular example bears only the Jaeger name, dating it to before the brand merged with LeCoultre in 1937. However, its quickset date functionality points to a later era of watchmaking.

A printed rectangular minute chapter frames the face, with triangular hour markers filled with luminous material, that have aged evenly and beautifully. Its military inspiration finds expression in the luminous Arabic indices and matching cathedral-style hour and minute hands that aid easily legibility. The hands are heat-blued, a technique that makes them both attractive and resistant to corrosion. Another hand, also heat-blued with a luminous tip, points to a chapter denoting the date in red Arabic print. A dedicated pusher, elegantly concealed on the side of the case at the four o’clock position, can be used to quickset the date.

An aperture at in the bottom half of the watch face features the day of the week in French in red in an attractive san serif font. Above it, the ‘8 jours’ references the clock’s eight-day power reserve.

An aperture on the top half of the dial displays this power reserve digitally, counting down to when the clock needs to be wound up again. Below the aperture the dial wears the Jaeger and Swiss-made mark, the second mention of the clock’s country of origin on the dial. The other Swiss mark is at the 6 o’clock position, just above the crown that winds up the clock. The clock case, mirror finished throughout, fits securely inside the pocket-sized grained leather case which folds open to act as a stand.

The clock’s mid-century military aesthetic and manual wind calibre, paired with conveniences such as the quickset pointer date and digital power reserve indicator make it a rare find suited to modern living.

If sold within the United Kingdom, this Jaeger travel clock will be subject to 20% VAT.
