This Jaeger-LeCoultre travel clock is an attractive piece that bears a rare double-signature, “L. Leroy & Cie.”, the historic brans of watchmakers and retailers, based in Paris. With its classic styling and look, the double-signed dial and the excellent condition, the piece truly captures the allure and mystery of the earliest days of transcontinental travel and Ados clocks.
While our desire to travel has existed since the beginning of time, the way we travel has evolved. These vintage travel clocks are the very epitome of modern luxury, representing a way of life that is quickly disappearing, and their meaning and function is having to be redefined by today’s collectors.
This intriguing Jaeger-LeCoultre piece features a discreet double-signature just above the six o’clock marker, where “L. Leroy & Cie” is printed. A historied brand who were known for creating impressive timepieces under their own name, they were also retailers based at the Palais-Royal in Paris, and operated between the years of 1870 to the early 20th century. This is a detail that makes the piece highly attractive, as these kinds of partnerships are seldom seen in any other sector of the luxury world.
Encased in black, lizard-textured leather, the clock also bears a delicately textured, linen silvered dial, adding to the vintage charm of the piece. The gilt-metal accents on the watch only highlight its classic aesthetic, while the addition of lume to the hands and studs increase legibility in dark conditions. The case can be swivelled open to reveal the clock face, and also doubles up as a stand for the piece.
An excellent companion to any bedside table, the clock can also be placed on a desk as an elegant touch, or brought along on a cruise or extended holiday to help recapture the romance of a lost time.
