This 1815 Chronograph combines the same, exceptional base chronograph movement as the mythical Datograph, with a more pared-back design. Measuring 39mm by 10.8mm, with a rose gold case and clean silver dial, this is perhaps the most restrained and classic chronograph from the German manufacture.
When it was first launched, the Datograph undoubtedly challenged the status quo with its completely in-house created movement. However, its design was not to everyone's taste. Some collectors clamoured for a more restrained and thinner version of the watch, which prompted the German manufacture to release the 1815 Chronograph in 2004. It was powered by the calibre L951.0, which is essentially a stripped-down version of the Datograph movement, where the big date mechanism has been removed. Apart from this, the calibre boasts the same technical and aesthetic characteristics as its older sibling.
The first release of the 1815 Chronograph featured a dial constructed on four layers, with a chapter ring and a pulsometer placed in the periphery. In 2010, the design was rendered simpler, with the pulsometer and chronograph hashmarks being removed, and other subtle changes being made throughout. These changes make the second-generation pieces perhaps the most restrained chronographs ever made by the German manufacture. The calibre was also updated, with a range of technical improvements. These second-generation 1815 Chronographs were exclusively produced between 2010 and 2014, in white and rose gold.
This 1815 Chronograph 402.032 features a pared-back dial, made out of solid silver. It is subtly layered over three levels, with the minute track sitting at the highest point, followed by the hour numerals, which are executed in the brand’s classic font. The central portion of the dial, which features the A. Lange & Söhne signature and the subdials, sits at the lowest point. This layering creates a satisfying level of depth, which becomes especially prominent when light hits the dial at different angles. The subdials on this piece are larger compared to the first generation and display the running seconds and minutes of the chronograph function. The case also features the brand’s distinctive notched lugs.
This 1815 Chronograph 402.032 is powered by the calibre L951.5, which combines a range of impressive technical and aesthetic features. The architecture of A. Lange and Söhne movements are perhaps their most distinctive feature, with a three-dimensional aspect that is truly unique. It features a column wheel, lateral clutch and flyback chronograph movement. Every bridge is ribbed, polished and chamfered, with a hand-engraved balance cock bringing an additional flourish.
The minute hand of the chronograph jumps in one-minute increments rather than moving continuously, which allows for accurate reading of the timing function. The “flyback” chronograph function also allows the stopwatch to be instantaneously restarted for continuous timing, without having to stop, reset, and restart the chronograph.
