Launched in 2015, this A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Chronograph Boutique Edition (Ref.414.026) is a beautifully designed piece that integrates classic features of the 1815 Chronograph series with more contemporary design cues, such as the blue accents on the dial. This example has just been serviced by the brand and was only unsealed for the purposes of photography.
This A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Chronograph Boutique Edition was created in tribute to the 200th birthday of Frederick Adolph Lange in 2015. The model is available exclusively in A. Lange & Söhne boutiques, hence its name. At first glance, the colour of the blue markers against the silver dial catches the eye, reminiscent of blue and white porcelain from the 19th century. Several distinctive features have been carried over from the first edition of the 1815 Chronograph, including a pulsometer – a feature that invokes a vintage aesthetic.
The 1815 Chronograph series is a descendant of the Datograph, which was introduced in 1999 and powered by the calibre L951.1. The movement challenged the status quo that had been in place for decades, where high-end manufactures such as Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet used movements provided by external suppliers. The newly developed calibre combined impressive mechanics with a remarkable aesthetic construction. It was praised by none other than Philippe Dufour, who owns a Datograph himself and wears it on a frequent basis. As the Swiss watchmaker put it:
“Take 10 movements out of the current range of any contemporary brand, put them next to a Lange movement, and comment honestly on what you see. That is the best way to judge – by examining the truth.”
However, when it was first launched, the Datograph was not to everyone's taste. Some collectors clamoured for a more restrained and thinner version of the design, which prompted the German manufacture to release the 1815 Chronograph in 2004. It was powered by the calibre L951.5, an updated version of the Datograph movement, the L951.1.
The finishing of the piece is nothing less than one would expect of A. Lange & Söhne, combining a range of impressive technical and aesthetic features. The architecture of A. Lange and Söhne movements are perhaps their most distinctive feature, with a three-dimensional aspect that is truly unique. The Boutique Edition features a column wheel, lateral clutch and flyback chronograph movement. Every bridge is ribbed, polished and chamfered, with a hand-engraved balance cock bringing an additional flourish.
