This 1815 Automatik combines the timeless elegance of the 1815 with an automatic movement that would later go on to power the Saxonia Automatic series. Produced a brief two-year period, between 2004 to 2006, this is an intriguing example that represents a transition point between both series.
Introduced in 2004, this 1815 Automatik possesses an unusual combination – the aesthetics of the 1815 Chronograph with an automatic movement that would go on to be included in the Saxonia Automatic series in 2007. This particular iteration was discontinued in 2006, after a brief two-year run, making it one of the more elusive models from the modern A. Lange & Söhne period, and one which many enthusiasts may not even have heard of.
While the design of the dial is extremely close to the first generation watches of the 1815 collection, there are several differences, such as the increased gap between the minute-track and bezel, the “Sax-O-Mat” inscription above the seconds sub-dial, and “zero reset” found printed at the base of the main dial, within the railroad track itself. The zero-reset function simultaneously stops the balance wheel whilst the seconds hand jumps to zero as the crown is pulled out, a particular system patented by A. Lange & Söhne in 1997. Allowing for a more accurate method of setting the time. Encased in platinum, the design of the piece is incredibly classic.
This Ref. 303.025 is powered by the L.991.2 Sax-O-mat movement, which has a bidirectional rotor. The aesthetics of the movement are just as impressive as the mechanics, with the chamfering and interior angles superbly hand finished. The words “Sax-O-Mat” are engraved on the rotor directly above the A. Lange and Söhne lettering. One of the many things that helped to cement this movement as German, not Swiss, was the use of untreated German silver. This metal not only gave the movements a unique shine, but over time they can start to develop a much richer hue that is distinct to the brand.
